Paul included the scull this painting to depict a typical boating activity during The Gilded Age. The High Bridge, officially the Aqueduct Bridge, is a steel arch bridge standing almost 140 feet above the Harlem River. It connects the Bronx and Manhattan, with its eastern end near West 170th Street in the Bronx and its western end in Manhattan's Highbridge Park. Resembling a Roman aqueduct, this stone arch bridge was constructed between 1837 and 1848 as part of the Croton Aqueduct system, carrying water 10 miles from the Croton River to meet NYC's growing needs. As New York City's oldest surviving bridge, The High Bridge was closed to traffic in the 1970s but has since reopened as a pedestrian walkway between Manhattan and The Bronx.
