Monk Seals are earless, subtropical seals known for their sleek bodies and playful nature. Adults measure 7-10 feet long and weigh 500-610 pounds. They are bottom feeders, hunting in waters 60-300 feet deep and eating fish, squid, octopus, and crustaceans. Their round heads and appearance led them to be likened to monks. Unfortunately, these amazing creatures are among the world’s most endangered marine mammals. Historically found throughout the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Atlantic coasts, Monk Seals were easy prey for hunters seeking fur, oil, and meat. Massive hunting and habitat loss in the 20th century led to their severe decline. Today only the Mediterranean Monk Seal and the Hawaiian Monk Seal remain, with the Caribbean Monk Seal extinct. Sensitive to human disturbance, they seek refuge in remote caves, though these habitats often endanger pups during storm surges. Continued conservation efforts are crucial to ensuring their survival.
